The Convair B-58 Hustler was a 1950s, high-altitude, high-speed, supersonic bomber designed near the dawn of the nuclear age. Designed to outrun and out climb Soviet interceptors, its career was cut short by the development of high-altitude air defense missiles that forced the aircraft into a low-altitude, supersonic penetration role. This additional wear and tear on the aircraft also severely reduced its range, and a re-thinking of all-nuclear Air Forces meant the Hustler was never used in its alternate role of conventional bombing. In spite of this short, lackluster operational career, the B-58 remains one of the most beautiful aircraft ever produced, and its sleek looks and all-metal finish are a high-point in the era of 1950s aircraft design and an icon of Strategic Air Command.
