Near the closing of 2021, the 48FW began receiving its first F-35s for the newly re-established 495th Fighter Squadron, the Valkyries. At the same time, the Wing began preparing for the departure of Europe's last F-15Cs, and the inactivation of the 493rd Fighter Squadron, the Grim Reapers.
To mark this changing of the guard, the 493rd painted F-15C 86-0172 in a special farewell scheme, and F-35 19-5484 received markings and theming as the Wing's new flagship.
