On 13 September 1985, the US Air Force successfully used an F-15A Eagle to launch an ASM-135 anti-satellite weapon, destroying the SolWind P78-1 satellite upon impact. This mission represented the culmination of nearly three decades dedication towards developing an anti-satellite capability. Although subsequently rendered obsolete by international agreements and changing technology, this mission was nevertheless groundbreaking, and provided key research and aerodynamic data for years to come.
